definitely Fe2O3 is best. mixing sulfur will make it easier to ignite but it will burn at a slightly cooler temperature.

well seeing as thermite was invented by the Germans I suggest you do your research using old WWII documents and things of the sort, also might be worth looking at railroad building because it is used to weld railroad tracks together a lot.
